Maidams(Graveyards)
of Dibrugarh District
A number of maidams of the reign of Ahom Swargodeos exist in different
places of Dibrugarh District. The word 'Maidam' comes from the Ahom
Language. The graveyards of the Ahoms are known as 'Maidams' 'Mai' means
rest and 'dam' means dead person.
Besides
the above mentioned 'maidams' several other 'maidams' still exist in the
district of Dibrugarh like the two 'maidams' located in the midst of the
Kaliapani Tea Estate. According to some historians these two 'maidams' are
of the parents of Tungkhungia Gobar Raja(who became king for only 21
days). There are two 'maidams' even on the premises of the Regional
Medical Research Centre at Lahowal. Another 'maidam' is to be found
on the banks of the river Sessa under Mancotta mouza of Dibrugarh.
It is not possible to give an exact estimate of the 'maidams'
in the district of Dibrugarh which are found in plenty.
